Soil type on the farm reflects the local geology of the area. That is to say it is very rocky. For those with a technical mind the underlying rocks are silurian shales and grey wackies.

| The above picture shows a soil profile taken on grazing ground. The soil here is very shallow with rocks protruding from the ground. At this sample site it was only possible to dig down 40cm before hitting bedrock. The soil itself was very stony and was mainly brown earth. In many places this distance would be shorter. | This picture shows a soil profile taken on the silage ground (which is in a seperate block). This ground is less rocky with similar top soil, only slightly deeper with an underlying band of gley subsoil. |
